Many might say I should have included the car or the washing machine here. These inventions have liberated individuals from drudgery but have not had the effect of the railways. The railways were the first way that humans could connect over long distances. Horses were used for thousands of years to travel from a to b but little changed until the railways ushered in the industrial revolution.

Printing is responsible for everything from the Christian Reformation to the development of science in the middle ages.
