The paradox of Supplements

We are continuously told that our diet does not contain all the essential foodstuffs for a healthy life yet we are also reminded that supplements are not an alternative to a balanced diet.

The experts then remind us that it is dangerous to overdose on many supplements so we have to be vigilant of what the label recommends. Over time experts say one thing then another experts says the exact opposite. This is true for all health issues and the paradox in their reasoning is the result of several things.

Firstly supplements are big business where they are often very expensive. The growth in health food shops are therefore the property of the middle class and rich. The education with its sense of empowerment allows wealthier people to focus more on their health rather than just working to survive. This community has driven the supplements industry.

The paradox with all health related issues is that everyone is unique and requires a different combination of health inputs to provide optimum health for that individual. I am not against supplements . I take many myself but I have had the time and focus to analyse my particular requirements. Many across the world do not have this privilege and their situation exposes them to preventable poor health issues.
